My name is Mr. Havlina. and I teach 3rd grade at Enterprise Elementary School. My first year teaching was in 2007 at Columbia Elementary School. I was born in a small town in Northern California called Tulelake. My father was a farmer and my mother was an elementary school teacher. I graduated from Tulelake High School and went to college at Simpson University in Redding, California. While there, I majored in Business Administration. After college, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher, so I went back to Simpson University and received my teaching credential and Masters in Education. Upon graduation, my wife and I moved down to Los Angeles, and I was hired at Columbia Elementary. I have two boys, Sawyer, who is 3, and Oliver, who is 6 months old.
I run a strict and fair classroom that is built on routines, high expectations, and student-centered learning. Safety is my first priority and I take pride in creating an emotionally safe environment in which students achieve their very best. Once students learn my rules, they will find that I have a great sense of humor and love to laugh. My goal is to develop higher order thinking skills through the use of differentiated instruction. I integrate technology into the classroom daily, and I meet the Common Core requirements though a wide variety of project based assignments. I encourage the use of restorative justice circles, where we emphasize emotional intelligence and problem solving skills through collaboration and positive communication. Our class values form the acronym for FAMILY.
F: Focus on the objective
A: Attitudes Matter!
M: Motivate yourself to do More
I: It's all about Resect
L: Listening is Learning
Y: You will Succeed
Inside my classroom you will always see students working hard or possibly hear my laugh. Our school is an AVID school so organization is a big part of my class. I also track my students' behavior with a program called CLASS DOJO. If you haven't used it, then I highly encourage everyone to sign up and participate. Your child will be required to have a Binder that they bring to and from school. The binder will contain a planner, two notebooks, homework folder, and important documents concealed within plastic. Parents must check it every night and make sure their child brings it to class EVERYDAY. I look forward to having a great year.
